Transport

For many of our students getting to and from school each day requires them to travel medium to long distances. Students have a range of transport options available to them.

Bicycle

Bicycle transportation is encouraged. Riding to school each morning is a great way to start the day. This environmentally friendly form of transport is enjoyed by many and students can safely store their bicycle in the lockable racks on site.

Buses

Afternoon routes

Important update: Afternoon departures from Aotea College are different to the published timetable on some days. On Tuesdays & Thursdays buses depart Aotea College at 2.27pm. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays buses will depart Aotea College at 3.20pm.

Fares

School-aged children get a 50% discount on the adult fare (known as a Child concession) on all Metlink services, except after midnight bus services. Concessions are still valid during school holidays. When using cash, the discount may not be exactly 50% of the adult fare, because cash fares are rounded up to the nearest 50 cent.

Riding the bus to school

  • School bus cancellations are extremely rare, but can happen in case of vehicle breakdowns and other emergencies. We recommend parents check service alerts for their child’s school service, and register for notifications of children’s school services in MyMetlink.
  • Drivers are instructed to never leave children behind at bus stops. We recommend parents and children have a backup plan in case they miss the bus or if the bus is full and cannot pick them up.
  • School children are allowed on all public bus, train, and ferry services.
  • School children need to carry their school ID or wear their school uniform when using public transport.
  • Bikes are not allowed on school buses (even if it has a bike rack), but small folding scooters are allowed.
  • Bus rules apply on school services, including rules about food and drink, noise, and behaviour as described in the Conditions of carriage.
  • Drivers do their best to manage behaviour on the bus, including bullying, but they may not always see it happening or be able to intervene while driving. We encourage students to talk to parents or school staff if they experience or witness bullying of any kind.
  • We expect school children, just like everyone else, to give priority seats on public buses and trains to those who need it, such as people who are disabled, elderly, or pregnant mothers.
  • Metlink is committed to making public transport accessible to all passengers.
  • Contact the Metlink Service Centre for lost property.

Motor Vehicles

Students are allowed to drive vehicles to school and park in the large student car park. All students must follow the school rules and laws and conditions of the licence they hold.

Students must consider local residents and be courteous in the behaviour, parking and use of vehicles.
