The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is New Zealand’s main secondary school qualification. It is typically completed in Years 11 to 13 (ages 15–18) and administered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
Overview of NCEA for Parents
Key Features:
- Three Levels: NCEA has Levels 1, 2, and 3, usually aligned with Years 11, 12, and 13.
- Credits System: Students earn credits through internal (school-assessed) and external (exam-based) assessments. Each subject has a mix of achievement standards worth a set number of credits.
- Pass Requirements: Each level requires a minimum number of credits (60 credits for each level). The Literacy and Numeracy co-requisites must be achieved to gain any level.
- Endorsements: Students can earn endorsements for subjects or certificate levels by achieving a high number of Merit or Excellence credits.
- NCEA is flexible and allows students to tailor their learning based on their interests, career goals, and future study plans.
